A New Dawn for Nightfarers#

Elden Ring: Nightreign has rolled out a significant update, version 1.03.2, bringing a wave of balance adjustments that could reshape the game's meta. The patch, officially titled "Balance Adjustments and Feature Updates," arrives with a comprehensive list of changes aimed at revitalizing gameplay and addressing long-standing community feedback.

While the update touches on numerous aspects of the game, its most notable impact is on a select group of characters that have struggled to find their footing. For months, these Nightfarers were considered less viable, but this latest patch aims to change that narrative with targeted and substantial buffs.

Targeted Character Buffs#

The core of the patch focuses on four specific Nightfarers who have been widely regarded as needing significant improvements. Each character received unique enhancements to their core mechanics, designed to amplify their strengths and mitigate their weaknesses.

Guardian, the team's primary tank, received direct buffs to his defensive capabilities. His damage negation against physical and elemental attacks has been increased, and his Guard Boost ability is now more effective, allowing him to better protect his teammates from boss assaults.

The heavy-hitting Raider was often criticized for being too slow to be viable in fast-paced encounters. To address this, his attack speed has been significantly increased across most of his moveset, making him a more formidable and responsive force on the battlefield.

Once considered weak overall, Revenant received a major power boost for her summoned spirits. The attack power of spirits summoned through her Ultimate Art, Immortal March, has been increased, and spirits summoned in the Deep of Night mode now scale more effectively with expedition depth.

Finally, Executor, a speedy melee attacker, received a comprehensive suite of buffs. These include increases to damage, stamina, and damage negation, alongside specific improvements to his Cursed Sword skill, such as enhanced critical hit power and reduced stamina cost on successful deflections.

"THEY BUFFED GUARDIAN, RAIDER, REVENANT AND EXECUTOR"

— Community Reaction

Community and Meta Impact#

The community response has been overwhelmingly positive, particularly among players who main the buffed characters. For months, dedicated players of Raider and Revenant have advocated for changes, especially as new characters introduced in the Forsaken Hollows DLC highlighted their relative weaknesses.

THEY BUFFED GUARDIAN, RAIDER, REVENANT AND EXECUTOR

This sentiment, echoed across community forums, reflects the excitement surrounding the update. The buffs are not merely incremental; they fundamentally alter the playability of these characters, potentially bringing them into the competitive spotlight. The adjustments are particularly timely, as the game continues to thrive nearly a year after its initial release, with a new DLC and a dedicated player base exploring the Deep of Night challenge mode.

Beyond the Buffs: Wider Changes#

While the character buffs are the headline feature, patch 1.03.2 includes a vast array of other adjustments. The patch notes detail numerous tweaks to Relics, Equipment, Sorcery, and Incantations, ensuring a more balanced experience across the board.

Specific changes include adjustments to item shop inventories, modifications to the FP cost of certain spells, and bug fixes for various skills. A particularly intriguing addition is the quiet introduction of 30 new weapon ID slots to the game. The purpose of these slots remains unclear, but their inclusion suggests potential future content or expanded weapon variety.

These broader adjustments demonstrate a holistic approach to game balance, ensuring that the improvements to underpowered characters are not made in a vacuum but are part of a larger effort to refine the player experience.

Patch Notes Deep Dive#

A closer look at the official patch notes reveals the specific nature of the changes made to the buffed characters and other game systems.

Key Character Adjustments:

  • Guardian: Increased damage negation and Guard Boost while guarding.
  • Raider: Increased attack speed for most weapons, except dual-wield and jump attacks. Added an attack power buff when HP is significantly reduced.
  • Revenant: Boosted the attack power of summoned spirits, with scaling in Deep of Night mode.
  • Executor: Enhanced critical hits, Guard Boost, and stagger damage with the Cursed Sword skill. Added a survival mechanic to the Aspects of the Crucible transformation.

Relic and System Tweaks:

  • Increased the effectiveness of relics that provide HP recovery from guarding.
  • Boosted the power of shockwaves from Guardian's guard-based relic effect.
  • Expanded the attack range of Raider's Totem Stela Ultimate Art.

Looking Ahead#

The release of patch 1.03.2 marks a pivotal moment for Elden Ring: Nightreign, signaling the developers' commitment to maintaining a dynamic and balanced game environment. By addressing the weaknesses of long-struggling characters, the patch not only revitalizes the gameplay for their mains but also encourages players to experiment with previously overlooked builds.

With the introduction of new weapon slots and ongoing support for the Deep of Night mode, the future of Nightreign looks promising. Players can now revisit their favorite characters with renewed confidence, and the game's meta is poised for a fresh evolution as the community explores the full impact of these comprehensive changes.

THEN AND NOW: Vintage photos show how department stores have changed

Department stores, then and now. Bettmann/Getty Images ; Kamil Krzaczynski/Getty Images Department stores have changed dramatically over the last 100 years. Department stores once sold necessities. Now, many are struggling to remain in business. While some classic chains cease to exist, other retailers have found ways to increase sales. In the early 1900s, department stores existed to sell necessities, including food, home goods, and apparel. Today, many luxury department stores are struggling to survive. The rise of the internet and surge in online sales have placed a major strain on department stores. Saks Global, the parent company of Saks Fifth Avenue, Bergdorf Goodman, and Neiman Marcus, became the latest department retailer to file for bankruptcy on Tuesday. Take a look at how department stores have changed over the last 100 years. In the early 1900s, department stores were focused on selling the necessities. A Harrods department store. Heritage Images/Getty Images Core products included clothing and home goods. During times of war, the necessities on sale included military jackets, coats, and accessories. That's why Harrods, a famous department store in London, featured an in-house tailoring room throughout World War I. The space was utilized to alter used uniforms and sell new ones. Department stores still sell the basics, but novelty items are also typically present. A modern Harrods department store. Prisma by Dukas/Getty Images You can find everything from household tools and fashionable clothes to toys and knickknacks at modern department stores — they seem to sell everything, in an apparent bid to compete with online retailers. Harrods also sells store-branded items, including bags, stationery, and teddy bears. Leading up to the 1930s, department stores were often crowded. A crowded department store. Bettmann/Getty Images Around 1929, people were encouraged to shop in order to help boost the nation's sinking economy, Fortune reported. But that same year, the stock market crashed, and the Great Depression officially began. The period lasted for 10 years, causing major layoffs, failing banks, and mass poverty. Today's department stores rarely see such large crowds, aside from major shopping events like Black Friday. In 2025, shoppers in the US were projected to spend a record $11.7 billion online on Black Friday, an 8.3% increase from 2024. It marked a contrast from the wild Black Friday scenes that could be seen in stores in the decade before the COVID-19 pandemic. JERSEY CITY, NJ - NOVEMBER 25: Customers line up at the cashier area at a Macy's store during Black Friday sales on November 25, 2022 in Jersey City, New Jersey. Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving, is traditionally regarded as the start of the holiday shopping season, with shoppers flocking to stores and online for bargains, but with consumer confidence down, retailers are bracing for a considerably slower Black Friday. Kena Betancur/Getty Images Modern shoppers often don't even have to interact with a cashier if they don't want to. Instead, they can use touchscreen self-checkout machines to purchase products from many department stores. Starting in 1924, Macy's celebrated the holidays with its first annual "Christmas Parade." A photo from the first parade was taken in 1924. Macy's Live animals such as elephants were included in the early days of the Macy's parade. Balloons depicting popular characters such as Mickey Mouse appeared a little later in the '30s. The name has since been changed to the "Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade." For example, live animals have been replaced with people dressed in costumes, and giant marching bands have become a staple. Tons of celebrities have also appeared on floats. As early as 1923, Barneys New York was a popular department store. Barneys New York. Peter Morgan/AP Barneys New York was created by a man named Barney Pressman when he pawned his wife's engagement ring and opened a shop on Seventh Avenue and 17th Street in New York City. By the '60s, Barney's son, Fred, had turned the location into a luxury store, and the company became a national sensation throughout the 1990s and 2000s. By 2019, there were 22 stores in the US. It grew to more than a dozen locations across cities, including Chicago, Philadelphia, and Columbia, South Carolina. By 2000, every Bonwit Teller store had gone out of business. Ten years later, in 1989, the store filed for bankruptcy and began shutting all of its stores, with its last location closing in 2000. While the flagship Bonwit Teller store would have been exempt from the closure, the building was purchased by Donald Trump in 1979, who demolished it to build Trump Tower.
