Zohran Mamdani will see his income rise dramatically when he is sworn in as mayor of New York City on January 1. He is scheduled to earn an annual salary of $258,750. This figure represents a pay increase of more than 80% compared to his current compensation of $142,000 as a state assemblyman.

The salary adjustment reflects the scope of the position. Managing a city of more than 8 million people carries different demands than representing a district of roughly 140,000 residents in Queens. However, the mayoral salary in New York City is not the highest in the country. The mayor of San Francisco earns a salary of more than $380,000, while the mayor of Los Angeles earns just over $300,000.

When compared to federal officials, the New York City mayor's salary is higher than that of most rank-and-file legislators. It exceeds the $174,000 annual salary earned by the majority of US senators and House members. Bloomberg had advised his successors not to live in the official residence, but that advice was not followed by Mayor Bill de Blasio, who moved in in 2014, or by Mayor Eric Adams.

Beyond the residence, the mayor receives security protection from the New York City Police Department and has access to benefits available to other city employees, including health insurance.

Before moving to the mayoral residence, Zohran Mamdani has lived in a rent-stabilized apartment in Astoria since 2018. He has stated that his monthly rent there is $2,300. According to estimates, Mamdani's net worth is approximately $200,000.

Mamdani expressed that he and his wife, Rama, would "miss much about our home in Astoria." He specifically mentioned the personal aspects of their life there, including "cooking dinner side by side in our kitchen, sharing a sleepy elevator ride with our neighbors in the evening, hearing music and laughter vibrate through the walls of the apartment."

Despite the physical move, Mamdani emphasized his continued connection to his former neighborhood. He stated, "I will be a mayor for the line cooks on Steinway, for the children swinging at Dutch Kills Playground, for the bus riders waiting for the Q101." He added, "While I may no longer live in Astoria, Astoria will always live inside me and the work I do."
