Quick Summary#

Video hosting platform Vimeo is conducting a significant reduction in its global workforce, a move that comes just months after the company was acquired by Bending Spoons. The Italian software firm finalized its purchase of the platform for $1.38 billion in late 2025, setting the stage for this major restructuring.

While the exact number of affected employees remains unclear, reports from former staff indicate the cuts are widespread. The layoffs have impacted teams across the company, signaling a dramatic shift in strategy for the newly merged entity.

Scale of the Reductions#

Former employees have taken to professional networks to share details about the scope of the layoffs. Dave Brown, the former Vice President of Brand at Vimeo, described the impact as a "large portion of the company" in a post on LinkedIn. His statement underscores the severity of the situation for the video platform.

Additional accounts from former staff corroborate this assessment. One former video engineer noted that the cuts affected "almost everyone" at the company, specifically mentioning that the entire video team was included in the layoffs. Another software engineer described being let go along with a "gigantic amount of the company," highlighting the breadth of the workforce reduction.

"a large portion of the company"

The rapid timeline of these cuts—occurring mere months after the acquisition—suggests a swift integration and restructuring process by the new ownership. For a company that has operated as a staple in the creative and professional video space for years, the sudden shift in personnel represents a significant moment in its corporate history.

The Acquisition Context#

The layoffs follow the completion of a major acquisition deal. Bending Spoons, an Italian software company known for acquiring and restructuring digital products, purchased Vimeo for a reported $1.38 billion. This acquisition was positioned as a move to leverage Vimeo's established brand and technology within Bending Spoons' broader portfolio.

Typically, acquisitions of this magnitude often lead to operational adjustments as the acquiring company aligns the acquired business with its strategic goals. In this instance, the restructuring appears to have taken the form of significant workforce reductions across Vimeo's global operations. The speed with which these changes have been implemented indicates a clear and immediate focus on optimizing the platform's operations under new management.

  • Acquisition value: $1.38 billion
  • Acquirer: Bending Spoons (Italian software company)
  • Timeline: Months after the deal closed
  • Impact: Global workforce reductions

The move by Bending Spoons is consistent with its history of acquiring digital properties and implementing operational efficiencies. For Vimeo, this marks a new chapter defined by a different corporate strategy and leadership approach.

Employee Impact#

The human cost of these corporate decisions is being felt by former employees who have shared their experiences publicly. Beyond the high-level descriptions of a "large portion" of the company being affected, specific roles and departments have been identified as part of the cuts.

The elimination of the video team is particularly notable, as it represents a core component of Vimeo's technical and creative operations. The loss of such a specialized department raises questions about the future direction of the platform's technical capabilities and product development.

Former software engineers have also reported being among those laid off, describing the scale as a "gigantic amount of the company." These firsthand accounts provide a clearer picture of the widespread nature of the reductions, affecting not just administrative or support roles but also critical technical personnel.

Looking Ahead#

As Vimeo moves forward under the ownership of Bending Spoons, the company faces the challenge of continuing its operations with a significantly reduced workforce. The long-term implications of these cuts for the platform's development, customer support, and market position remain to be seen.

For the creative and professional communities that rely on Vimeo for video hosting and distribution, the changes may impact the pace of new feature releases and the level of support available. The acquisition and subsequent layoffs mark a pivotal moment for the platform, signaling a shift toward a new operational model focused on efficiency and integration with its parent company's strategy.

Observers of the technology sector will be watching closely to see how Vimeo's product evolves under this new structure and whether the platform can maintain its standing in a competitive market while navigating this significant transition.

FIPS Dependencies and Prebuilt Binaries

Author here. This came out of debugging a real Rails app running in a FIPS enabled container. Everything looked correct. OpenSSL 3 with the FIPS provider enabled. Ruby built against it. A simple pg connection worked. The app failed once ActiveRecord was involved. The error came from libpq. It turned out the pg gem had pulled in a prebuilt native dependency that was linked against different crypto. That path was always there. It just was not exercised until ActiveRecord hit it. Forcing a source build fixed the issue because the extension then linked against the OpenSSL in the image. The takeaway is that a FIPS base image does not mean your dependency graph respects the same boundary once native code is involved. Curious how others have seen this play out in Ruby, Python wheels, Go with CGO, or Node native addons. Comments URL: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=46726259 Points: 4 # Comments: 1
