Quick Summary#

The unreleased sandbox game Hytale has joined the extensive list of platforms capable of running the 1993 classic FPS Doom. Modder tr7zw uploaded a video demonstrating the game running '100% inside a Hytale mod' prior to the title's official release. The implementation features a blocky in-game monitor floating in the world and runs at approximately 20 frames per second.

This technical demonstration arrives just before Hytale's scheduled early access launch tomorrow. Hypixel Studios founder Simon Collins-Laflamme is anticipating significant player interest, expecting over one million players on release day. The development team has faced a turbulent history, including a cancellation in June 2025 before the project was revived in November. Despite the short timeline, the studio has prepared the game for release with full support from the CurseForge modding platform.

Doom Runs on Unreleased Sandbox#

The classic first-person shooter Doom has been successfully executed within the unreleased sandbox game Hytale. Modder tr7zw shared a video showing the game running '100% inside a Hytale mod' before the game's official launch. The implementation is described as fully functional, though the controls are not optimized for ideal gameplay.

The visual presentation of the mod is distinct, involving a player standing in the game world while viewing the action on a blocky in-game monitor floating in the air. The game runs at a rate of 20fps. While the controls are reportedly difficult to use, the feat demonstrates the flexibility of Hytale's engine prior to its public release.

The tradition of running Doom on unconventional hardware and software platforms is long-standing. The game is famously portable and has been adapted to run on a wide variety of devices, including:

  • Cooking pots
  • Smart photo frames
  • Receipt printers
  • Wikipedia
  • Alarmo

Hytale now adds its name to this growing list of unconventional platforms.

"It was barely playable. All basics were broken. Camera, movement, combat, crafting, building, gameloop, sounds, rendering. Everything, everything was wrong."

— Simon Collins-Laflamme, Founder of Hypixel Studios

Early Access and Modding Support 🛠️#

Hytale is scheduled to launch in early access tomorrow, yet the modding infrastructure is already operational. The modding platform CurseForge is fully prepared to support the community's modifications. This readiness is significant given the game's sandbox nature and its similarities to Minecraft, a game known for its extensive modding community.

Expectations for the launch are high. Simon Collins-Laflamme, founder of Hypixel Studios, is predicting over one million players will access the game on release day. To manage the anticipated server load, Collins-Laflamme has urged fans to download the game launcher in advance to help reduce stress on the systems tomorrow.

Despite the excitement, the development team is not resting. Collins-Laflamme noted that the team must continue to push forward for years to make up for lost time. The studio is committing additional resources to ensure the game reaches its full potential.

A 'Miracle' Development Recovery#

The road to release for Hytale has been difficult. The game was initially announced in 2018 by the developers of the popular Minecraft server Hypixel. Riot Games acquired the studio mid-development to support the project. However, the game was delayed several times as its scope expanded, eventually leading to the project being canceled and the studio closing in June 2025.

In a surprising turn of events, Simon Collins-Laflamme announced in November that he had acquired the IP rights and restarted development. The team managed to prepare a playable early access version in a matter of weeks. Collins-Laflamme described the recovery as a 'damn miracle,' noting that the game was barely playable at the time of the restart.

Collins-Laflamme provided insight into the state of the game during the transition:

"It was barely playable. All basics were broken. Camera, movement, combat, crafting, building, gameloop, sounds, rendering. Everything, everything was wrong."

Despite the challenges, the team successfully turned the game around. Collins-Laflamme stated:

"It should have taken years to fix, but within weeks, we got the game into a playable, fun state. And now, instead of slowing down or celebrating a release, we have to keep pushing for years to make up for the time that was lost."

The founder emphasized his commitment to the project's vision:

"So yes, I feel anger. And I’m turning that into focus and execution. I’m committing more money, more time, and personal sacrifice to deliver the game this vision deserves."

Financially, the game is already secure. According to the developers, Hytale has generated enough revenue to cover the next two years of development costs.

"It should have taken years to fix, but within weeks, we got the game into a playable, fun state. And now, instead of slowing down or celebrating a release, we have to keep pushing for years to make up for the time that was lost."

Lego Smart Brick: watch an immersive 15-minute demo like you’re right there with us at CES

Sean Hollister demos the Lego Smart Brick at CES. The Lego Smart Brick won our Best in Show award at CES 2026, and it was no wonder after watching Lego designer Maarten Simons' expert demo there. So I thought: why not let you virtually attend the same tech demo I did? Before I left Las Vegas, I snuck back into Lego's suite to film a 15-minute uncut immersive video of what these bricks can do. It just so happens I brought an unusual camera to Las Vegas this year: a Qoocam Q3 Ultra modded for VR180 capture by Siyang Qi. It creates spatial stereoscopic 3D video that you can experience in a headset (like the Meta Quest), or tap-to-drag on a flat screen, or even tilt using the sensors in your p … Read the full story at The Verge.
