Direct Appeal#

In a significant escalation of rhetoric, President Donald Trump has issued a direct message to the people of Iran. The President urged citizens to continue their widespread protests and to seize control of government institutions.

The statement marks a notable shift in diplomatic approach. It signals the administration's willingness to openly support internal dissent within Iran.

Help is on its way

These words from the President frame the administration's position as one of active support for the protest movement. The message comes at a critical juncture in US-Iran relations.

Diplomatic Breakdown#

The President's public appeal coincides with a halt in diplomatic channels. The administration has canceled unspecified meetings with Iranian officials.

Despite the cancellation, the President has not provided details regarding the nature of the help being offered. This lack of clarification leaves the specific mechanisms of support undefined.

The cancellation of meetings suggests a hardening of the US position. It indicates a move away from traditional diplomatic engagement with the current Iranian administration.

  • Meetings with Iranian officials canceled
  • No details on specific aid offered
  • Rhetoric shifts to direct citizen appeal

"Help is on its way"

— Donald Trump, President of the United States

Parallel Diplomatic Track#

Alongside the President's statements, another diplomatic maneuver is taking place. Witkoff is reported to be meeting with the son of the deposed shah.

This meeting carries significant historical weight. The shah was overthrown during the 1979 revolution that brought the current Iranian regime to power.

Engagement with the heir to the monarchy suggests the administration may be exploring alternative leadership options for Iran. It signals potential support for a fundamental change in Iran's governance structure.

The move aligns with the President's encouragement of protesters to seize institutions. It suggests a coordinated strategy to pressure the current regime from multiple angles.

Strategic Implications#

The combination of these actions represents a coherent strategy of regime pressure. By encouraging protests and engaging with opposition figures, the administration is positioning itself against the current Iranian government.

The refusal to elaborate on 'help' creates uncertainty. This ambiguity may be intentional, keeping the Iranian government guessing about US intentions.

Historical context is crucial here. The US has long been at odds with the Iranian regime since the 1979 revolution and subsequent hostage crisis.

The current approach appears to be a departure from recent diplomatic norms. It moves toward a more confrontational stance that prioritizes internal pressure over external negotiation.

What Comes Next#

The situation remains fluid as the administration balances public rhetoric with private diplomacy. The Witkoff meeting will likely provide insight into the administration's long-term strategy.

Iranian citizens now face a complex choice. They have received encouragement from the highest levels of the US government, but the specifics of that support remain undefined.

The cancellation of diplomatic meetings suggests the administration is not currently seeking a negotiated resolution. Instead, it appears to be betting on internal pressure to force change.

International observers will be watching closely to see how the Iranian government responds to these developments. The risk of escalation remains high.

Key Takeaways#

The administration's approach to Iran has undergone a fundamental shift. The President is now openly supporting internal dissent.

Three key elements define this new strategy:

  1. Direct encouragement of protesters to seize institutions
  2. Cancellation of diplomatic meetings with current officials
  3. Engagement with historical opposition figures

The message to Iranian citizens is clear: the US stands with their cause. However, the exact nature of that support remains deliberately vague.

As events unfold, the administration's strategy will be tested. The effectiveness of this approach in achieving US policy goals remains to be seen.

Senate passes Defiance Act for a second time to address Grok deepfakes

The Senate has passed the Disrupt Explicit Forged Images and Non-Consensual Edits (DEFIANCE ) Act with unanimous consent, according to the bill’s co-sponsor Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL). The bill lets the subjects of nonconsensual, sexually explicit deepfakes take civil action against the people who create and host them. Deepfakes are a known issue online, but without the proper protections, easy access to AI-powered image and video generation tools has made it possible for anyone to create compromising content using another person's likeness. This has become a particular problem on X, where the integration of Grok, the AI assistant created by X's parent company xAI, makes it possible for anyone to turn the content of another person's post into an image-generating prompt. Over the last month, that's allowed users to create sexually explicit images of children, just by replying to a post with @grok and a request. In response, Ofcom, the UK's media regulator, has already opened an investigation into X for potentially violating the Online Safety Act. The chatbot has also been outright blocked in Malaysia and Indonesia. The DEFIANCE Act won't prevent Grok or other AI tools from generating nonconsensual deepfakes, but it would make creating or hosting that content potentially very expensive for anyone on the receiving end of a lawsuit. The Senate passed an earlier version of the DEFIANCE Act in 2024, but it stalled in the House. Given the urgency of Grok's deepfake problem, the hope is this new version of the bill won't see the same resistance. Congress passed an earlier piece of deepfake regulation last year, the Take It Down Act, with bipartisan support. That bill was focused on the companies who host nonconsensual, sexually explicit content, rather than the people exploited by it. Anthropic says its buzzy new Claude Cowork tool was mostly built by AI — in less than 2 weeks

Anthropic's Claude Cowork AI tool, which has launched as a research preview this week. Anthropic Anthropic employees used Claude to build Cowork, its new agentic tool launched this week. The AI startup said that it saw a number of customers were using Claude Code for non-coding tasks, inspiring Cowork. The new tool, which is in preview, has generated buzz in the AI community. Anthropic's new working agent was largely built by Claude itself — the latest example of AI coding tools speeding up product development. On Monday, Anthropic announced the release of Cowork, a "more approachable" AI tool accompanying Claude Code that's geared toward fulfilling users' requests that are unrelated to programming. Users grant the agentic AI tool access to specific files on their computer and prompt it to complete tasks. Boris Cherny, head of Claude Code, said that Anthropic's AI coded "pretty much all" of Cowork. "@claudeai wrote Cowork," Product Manager Felix Rieseberg wrote on X. "Us humans meet in-person to discuss foundational architectural and product decisions, but all of us devs manage anywhere between 3 to 8 Claude instances implementing features, fixing bugs, or researching potential solutions." As a result, Rieseberg said the first edition of Cowork came together quickly. "This is the product that my team has built here, we sprinted at this for the last week and a half," he said during a livestream with Dan Shipper. Over the holidays, Rieseberg said that Anthropic saw its customers using Claude for an increasing number of non-coding-related tasks. "This sort of like the research preview, very early Alpha, a lot of rough edges, as you've already seen, right?" he said. Cowork is initially available to Claude Max subscribers on the Mac app. The launch has made a splash in the tech world, with many online users praising the product and its accessibility. "I think that's a really smart product," Datasette co-creator Simon Willison wrote in a blog about his experience. "Claude Code has an enormous amount of value that hasn't yet been unlocked for a general audience, and this seems like a pragmatic approach." "This is big," Reddit cofounder Alexis Ohanian wrote on X. Because granting an AI agent access and the ability to take action on specific computer files comes with risk, Anthropic cautions that Cowork users should be careful. "By default, the main thing to know is that Claude can take potentially destructive actions (such as deleting local files) if it's instructed to," the company said. "Since there's always some chance that Claude might misinterpret your instructions, you should give Claude very clear guidance around things like this. " The latest in a flurry of AI announcements AI companies wasted no time in launching new offerings and partnerships to kick off the new year. On Sunday, Anthropic announced Claude for Healthcare, a major addition to its healthcare and life sciences offerings. Its release came on the heels of rival OpenAI signaling its investment in the healthcare space with ChatGPT Health. Amid AI bubble chatter and scrutiny on the increasing AI investments made by tech companies, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has argued that Anthropic has built a more sustainable business model that allowed it to make more educated bets on its future build-out. While he did not name OpenAI or CEO Sam Altman directly, he made some thinly veiled criticisms of his former company throughout the event. "I think because we focus on enterprise, I think we have a better business model," Amodei said at The New York Times' Dealbook Summit. "I think we have better margins. I think we're being responsible about it." Google, which some experts saw as overtaking OpenAI at the end of 2025, announced a major deal with Apple to have Gemini power Siri's artificial intelligence capabilities.
