Quick Summary#

International conflict and domestic tensions are prompting some Americans to consider relocating abroad. The 2025 Global Peace Index (GPI) ranks the United States as the 128th most peaceful country in the world, placing it behind nations such as South Africa, Zimbabwe, and India.

Recent military operations in Venezuela, which resulted in the capture of President Nicolás Maduro, have caused airspace restrictions in the Caribbean, leaving thousands of travelers stranded. These events, combined with concerns regarding crime rates and cost of living, have increased the desire for relocation. A Gallup poll released in October 2024 showed that 21% of polled Americans expressed a desire to move abroad, up from 17% in 2023.

The GPI evaluates countries based on three domains: societal safety and security, ongoing conflict, and militarization. Iceland ranks first across all three domains, maintaining its status as the world's safest country despite high living costs. Other nations in the top 10 include Ireland, New Zealand, Austria, and Switzerland.

US Ranking and Relocation Trends#

Global peace has gained new importance for travelers and potential expatriates. The 2025 Global Peace Index places the United States at rank 128, a position that reflects ongoing domestic and international tensions. The index evaluates nations based on societal safety and security, ongoing conflicts, and militarization. While safety is subjective, the data indicates the US falls behind nations like South Africa, Zimbabwe, and India.

Factors driving the desire to relocate include:

  • Rising crime rates
  • Work-life balance concerns
  • Cost of living
  • Parenting values

Despite the growing interest in leaving, the United States remains the most desired destination for citizens of other countries looking to move, according to Gallup data.

Recent events have underscored the volatility of international travel. Following a US military operation in Venezuela that led to the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, airspace restrictions were implemented. This left thousands of travelers stuck in the Caribbean, highlighting the risks associated with geopolitical instability.

The Top 5 Peaceful Nations 🌍#

The 2025 GPI identifies several nations as havens of stability. These countries consistently rank high in the index's domains, offering residents and expatriates a secure environment.

1. Iceland

Iceland retains the title of the world's safest country. It ranked first across all three GPI domains. Despite being one of the most expensive nations, it offers the highest level of safety based on global peace metrics.

2. Ireland

Ireland ranks second overall. It placed within the top five countries in the militarization domain. Known for its cultural heritage and landscapes, it is a common destination for Americans seeking to move.

3. New Zealand

New Zealand is the most peaceful country in the Asia-Pacific region. It received the top ranking in the ongoing conflicts domain. Expatriates cite family-friendly towns and natural beauty as key attractions.

4. Austria

Austria has maintained a top position in the GPI since the index began in 2008. Its capital, Vienna, has been ranked as the world's most livable city and a premier destination for expats.

5. Switzerland

Switzerland ranks in the top 10 for both ongoing conflicts and societal safety. Geneva, often called the global "Peace Capital," is a major draw for expats driven by quality of life.

Rounding Out the Top 10 🏖️#

Several other nations offer high levels of peace and stability, attracting travelers and those looking to relocate.

  • Singapore: Ranked as the second-safest country in the Asia-Pacific region. It is a popular destination for American expats, particularly those interested in entrepreneur economies. It ranked in the top five for societal safety and ongoing conflicts.
  • Portugal: A recent favorite for Americans looking to move abroad. A survey by Expatsi identified Portugal as the most requested destination for US citizens in 2024. It ranks second in the world based on the GPI militarization domain.
  • Denmark: Ranked as the world's sixth most peaceful country based on societal safety. However, it saw a relative deterioration in its militarization ranking due to increased military spending.
  • Slovenia: The home country of first lady Melania Trump, Slovenia ranked sixth based on the militarization domain. It is often described as a hidden gem in Europe due to its landscapes.
  • Finland: Ranked third on the societal safety and security domain. Finland is also consistently ranked as the happiest country in the world, attracting expats looking for a higher quality of life.

Conclusion#

The 2025 Global Peace Index highlights a shifting landscape of international stability. With the United States ranking 128th, many citizens are evaluating their options for relocation. Countries like Iceland, Ireland, and New Zealand offer a stark contrast, providing high levels of safety and quality of life. As geopolitical tensions continue to evolve, the demand for peaceful living environments remains a significant factor in global migration patterns.

My boyfriend and I broke up hours before the international trip we'd planned together. I still went by myself.
Lifestyle

My boyfriend and I broke up hours before the international trip we'd planned together. I still went by myself.

Instead of going on a trip with my partner, I headed to a new country all by myself and don't regret it. Leanna Coy I was supposed to go on a trip with my boyfriend, but we fought before our flights and split. Still, I went on the trip alone and ended up making friends and having a great time. Solo travel can be a healing experience, but it's worth tying regardless of relationship status. My boyfriend of two and a half years broke the long silence with the question we were both wondering: "Are we still going?" We were supposed to be driving to the airport to leave for our five-day trip to Lisbon. Instead, we'd had an argument over the phone that morning that left me questioning how we'd even make it through a flight, let alone an international trip. Our relationship had been rocky for quite some time, but our travel plans were fast approaching, and I didn't want to give them up. The good news is we were flying standby, so our tickets were 100% refundable. "You don't want to go?" I asked. "I can cancel your ticket right now." Turns out, he didn't think it was a good idea to still travel together — but, hey, I love a solo trip. We split. I kept my plane ticket. My adrenaline was high and my heart was racing, but I ultimately felt relieved as I drove to the Boston airport alone, and boarded my flight. Despite shedding a few tears at first, I had an incredible trip I cried a few times during the flight, but I couldn't stop smiling when I heard the pilot say, "Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to Lisbon." I was so proud of myself for making it there alone — and, from there, the trip was surprisingly smooth. Since I'd used my credit-card points to book our hotel room, it was already in my name. I'd planned our whole itinerary myself anyway, so I just followed it on my own. Though I shed a few more tears while coping with our breakup, I found exploring a new country was a wonderful way to clear my mind. While having a drink on my own, I made new friends. Leanna Coy Over the next few days, I wandered around Lisbon's many viewpoints, ate amazing food, drank great wine, and even made some friends. While at a café, two girls noticed I was by myself and asked me to join their table. We spent over an hour divulging our life stories to each other. The next day, I went on a guided excursion to Sintra, a beautiful town about 30 minutes away from Lisbon. At the beginning of the tour, a woman and her niece started chatting with me, and asked if I was alone. When I told them about the breakup, they decided to "adopt" me. We spent the day together hiking to Pena Palace (the town's colorful castle on a hill) and exploring the local shops. Throughout the trip, I couldn't stop thinking about how much happier I was than if I had come with my boyfriend. I got to enjoy the city at my own pace, without worrying about keeping the peace in my unstable relationship. I'm grateful that I had the guts to visit a new country on my own Everyone should think about trying solo travel at least once. Leanna Coy Fortunately, solo travel was not a new concept for me. No matter my relationship status, I've always made time to travel on my own and, as a flight attendant, it comes naturally. It's nice to not have to worry about anyone else's budget or availability — I can just go where I want, when I want. Traveling solo was so in-character for me that when I posted about it on my Instagram, the only people who realized anything was wrong (or that I was fresh out of a relationship) were the ones I'd told. Later on, my friends told me they were proud of me for choosing to go on the trip alone. However, not going was never an option to me. If I hadn't already been comfortable with traveling solo, I probably wouldn't have had the guts to go to Portugal by myself, and I would've missed out on what became an amazing, healing trip. Honestly, I'd encourage everyone to try solo travel, regardless of their relationship status. Navigating a new place on your own is a huge confidence boost and the best way to get to know yourself.
