Quick Summary#

The collaboration between Lego and Pokémon has generated immediate frenzy among collectors and resellers alike. The new building sets, featuring the original three starter Pokémon from the Kanto region, are already seeing aggressive scalping activity just as they begin to hit store shelves.

While the sets are designed to be accessible to fans, the secondary market has already dictated a much higher price point. Listings for the complete trio have appeared online with price tags exceeding $1,000, signaling that securing these items at retail price may prove difficult for many enthusiasts.

The Frenzy Begins#

Scalpers are moving quickly to capitalize on the hype surrounding the new Pokémon Lego sets. The collection includes detailed brick-built versions of Charizard, Venusaur, and Blastoise, which are staples of the franchise's history.

These sets are not just toys; they are highly sought-after collectibles. The demand is driven by a combination of nostalgia for the original Pokémon games and the popularity of Lego as a hobby. As a result, the market is currently volatile.

Resellers are utilizing various online platforms to list these items. The primary tactics observed include:

  • Listing sets for immediate profit
  • Capitalizing on limited initial stock
  • Targeting collectors willing to pay premium prices

Price Analysis#

The financial disparity between retail and resale prices is stark. The specific sets mentioned—Charizard, Venusaur, and Blastoise—are being grouped together in listings to maximize value.

Current market observations show these sets listed for more than a grand. This pricing strategy effectively prices out casual fans and creates a barrier to entry for legitimate collectors looking to build their display.

The situation reflects a broader trend in the collectibles market where high-demand items are immediately scooped up to be flipped for profit. This leaves the original intended audience struggling to purchase the product at its intended price point.

Collector Impact#

For the average consumer, this scalping activity creates a frustrating purchasing experience. The goal of acquiring the Charizard, Venusaur, and Blastoise sets at retail price becomes a challenge of speed and luck.

The presence of scalpers suggests that physical store shelves may be cleared out quickly, and online inventory will likely sell out almost instantly. This dynamic forces collectors into a difficult position: wait for a restock that may take months or pay inflated prices on the secondary market.

Key impacts on the community include:

  • Reduced availability for genuine fans
  • Increased frustration within the collecting community
  • Rapid inflation of market value

Market Context#

This event is not isolated; it follows a pattern seen with other high-profile Lego releases. When a set combines a popular IP like Pokémon with a beloved building format, the result is a perfect storm for scalpers.

The Kanto starters are among the most recognizable characters in the world, ensuring that demand was always going to be high. However, the speed at which the resale market has reacted—with listings appearing almost immediately—demonstrates the organized nature of modern scalping operations.

Collectors are advised to stay vigilant regarding official restocks and to be wary of prices that seem too good to be true, as the current market average sits well above the original retail cost.

Looking Ahead#

The Pokémon Lego sets have officially entered the market with a bang, but not necessarily in the way the manufacturer intended. The immediate price gouging by scalpers sets a challenging tone for the release.

For now, the Charizard, Venusaur, and Blastoise sets remain a high-value target. Whether Lego or retailers will implement measures to curb this activity remains to be seen. Until then, collectors must navigate a market where these iconic sets are valued at over $1,000 by resellers.

EA delays Battlefield 6 Season 2 to February 17

The second season of Battlefield 6 is being pushed back based on “community feedback.” On Tuesday, EA and Battlefield Studios said Season 2 will now arrive on February 17. Season 2 of Battlefield 6 had previously been scheduled for January 20, so we're looking at a delay of almost a month. As a consolation, the team is extending Season 1 through the start of the next season. "During our ongoing development, we've continued to review community feedback and, in order to keep our promise, determined that our best path forward is to extend Season 1 and give ourselves extra time to further polish and refine Season 2," EA wrote in a blog post. The game came out of the gates hot following its October launch, selling over seven million copies over its first three days. But recent Steam reviews provide a glimpse into the "community feedback" that sparked the delay. "The Battle Pass is extremely predatory and very FOMO, while the season itself doesn't give a lot to offer," one review with over 450 “helpful” votes said. They called out the title for having "so much FOMO stuff that it becomes more stressful than fun." The Season 1 extension will include some bonus content. The Frostfire Bonus Path will give “players the chance to unlock new free and premium customization rewards, including a Weapon Package and a Soldier Skin, as well as XP Boosts, by advancing through the tiers of the Frostfire Bonus Path." The extension update arrives on January 20. This article originally appeared on Engadget at https://www.engadget.com/gaming/ea-delays-battlefield-6-season-2-to-february-17-180306743.html?src=rss
