  • State highways (PIs) saw 2,198 accidents and 203 fatalities.
  • Federal highways (BRs) recorded 1,388 accidents and 156 deaths.

  • July was the deadliest month with 112 deaths.

Quick Summary

Piauí recorded 3,586 traffic accidents between January and early December 2025, resulting in 1,059 deaths and thousands of injuries. The data comes from the Federal Highway Police (PRF) and the State Military Police (PM-PI).

State highways (PIs) accounted for 2,198 accidents, while federal highways (BRs) saw 1,388 incidents. The deadliest roads included BR-343 with 47 fatalities and BR-135 with 35. Authorities cited excessive speed and unsafe passing as leading causes.

Key tragedies included a bus rollover in Corrente that killed seven people and a multi-vehicle crash in Teresina that claimed three lives. July was the deadliest month with 112 fatalities.

State Highway Statistics and Incidents

The State Military Police (PM-PI) reported 2,198 accidents on state highways (PIs) during the period. These incidents resulted in 1,906 injuries and 203 deaths. Among the recorded accidents, 1,626 involved injuries, while 198 were fatal.

Two specific incidents drew significant attention in August. In Teresina, a collision at the intersection of Avenues Gil Martins and Barão de Castelo Branco involved four vehicles, killing three people and injuring four others.

On the PI-120 highway between Valença do Piauí and Novo Oriente do Piauí, a pregnant catechist died. Maira Mickaelle Martins Santos, who was two months pregnant, was killed in a crash involving a car and two motorcycles. Three other people were injured in that accident.

Federal Highway Collisions and Causes

The Federal Highway Police (PRF) documented 1,388 accidents on federal highways (BRs), leading to 1,561 injuries and 156 deaths. Frontal collisions were the most common type of accident recorded.

Several deadly incidents occurred throughout the year. In January, a bus overturned in Corrente in the southern part of the state. The crash killed seven people and injured 19. One driver who was sleeping in the luggage compartment died in the accident.

In April, a van and a truck collided head-on in the rural area of Tanque Velho, located in São Braz do Piauí. Six women died, and 11 other people were injured. In September, anesthesiologist Caio Bruno de Souza died after his motorcycle collided with a truck on the BR-343 in Campo Maior.

The PRF identified the main causes of accidents as:

  • Driving against the flow of traffic
  • Lack of reaction time
  • Entering the roadway without safety
  • Delayed reaction

Deadliest Roads and Monthly Breakdown

BR-343 was the most lethal federal highway in 2025, recording 47 deaths. Other high-fatality routes included:

  • BR-135: 35 deaths
  • BR-316: 32 deaths
  • BR-230: 15 deaths
  • BR-407: 13 deaths
  • BR-222: 10 deaths
  • BR-402: 3 deaths

July was the month with the highest number of traffic fatalities, with 112 deaths. The following months recorded the highest death tolls:

  1. July: 112
  2. April: 104
  3. October: 103
  4. June: 99
  5. May: 97
  6. August: 100
  7. November: 86
  8. January: 85
  9. March: 82
  10. February: 70
  11. September: 74
  12. December (early): 47

In October, a motorcyclist died after colliding with a cow in the North Zone of Teresina. Following the accident, bystanders quartered the still-living animal, an event that generated widespread reaction on social media.

Conclusion

The data from 2025 highlights a severe safety crisis on the roads of Piauí. With over 3,500 accidents and more than 1,000 lives lost in less than a year, the statistics underscore the urgent need for improved traffic enforcement and driver awareness.

While specific incidents like the bus rollover in Corrente and the fatal crash on PI-120 capture public attention, the cumulative monthly data reveals a consistent pattern of loss. Addressing the primary causes—such as driving against traffic and excessive speed—remains critical to reducing the number of fatalities on both state and federal highways.
