Quick Summary#

It has been over eight years since the release of Super Mario Odyssey, and speculation is growing regarding the timeline for the next mainline 3D Mario title. The argument for a 2026 release centers on Nintendo's recent software releases, which may have exhausted major franchises for the year.

Recent major releases include Super Mario Bros. Wonder, Mario Kart World, and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. Additionally, the upcoming debut of The Super Mario Bros. Galaxy Movie in April is viewed as a strategic opportunity to capitalize on renewed interest in the franchise.

The Switch 2 console reportedly fell behind the Switch 1 in sales during the previous holiday season, a factor attributed to the absence of a major Western game. A new 3D Mario title is identified as a potential solution to this gap. Historically, Nintendo has rarely produced direct sequels for 3D Mario games, with Super Mario Galaxy 2 being the primary exception, suggesting the next title may be a new adventure rather than Super Mario Odyssey 2.

The Eight-Year Wait#

The gap between major 3D Mario releases has extended significantly. The last mainline entry before Super Mario Odyssey was Super Mario Galaxy 2, released in 2010. This created a seven-year gap for that generation. As of 2026, the wait for an Odyssey successor has surpassed eight years.

Expectations were high for a release in the fall of 2025. Many anticipated that Nintendo would celebrate the 40th anniversary of the original Super Mario Bros. with a new 3D title. This release strategy would have mirrored the original Switch launch, where Odyssey drove sales during the system's first holiday season. However, the anniversary passed with only a 4K remaster of Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2 being offered.

Nintendo's Software Lineup#

Analysis of Nintendo's recent release schedule suggests the company may be ready to launch a major title. Many of Nintendo's heavy hitters have already seen recent releases, potentially clearing the way for a new 3D Mario game later this year.

Key recent and upcoming releases include:

  • Super Mario Bros. Wonder (Fall 2023)
  • Mario Kart World (Switch 2 launch title)
  • The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom (2023)
  • Donkey Kong Bananza (Switch 2 launch window)
  • Super Mario Party Jamboree (2024)
  • Pokémon Legends: Z-A (Fall 2025)
  • Metroid Prime 4 (released recently)

With these major franchises recently updated, a new 3D Mario game fits the schedule. Furthermore, an unnamed senior source revealed that Switch 2 sales fell behind the pace of the Switch 1 in key markets during the past holiday season. This was attributed to the "absence of a major Western game." A global title like 3D Mario could address this sales gap.

Synergy with the Movie 🎬#

The release of The Super Mario Bros. Galaxy Movie on April 3 provides a strong marketing catalyst. The first movie became the highest-grossing video game movie ever, earning over $1.3 billion at the box office. A sequel is expected to generate similar enthusiasm.

Releasing a new game alongside the movie's theatrical run would allow Nintendo to capitalize on the massive publicity. Super Mario Odyssey sold nearly 30 million copies. A successor released on the Switch 2 could replicate these numbers, potentially generating significant revenue and driving hardware sales.

What Form Will It Take?#

While the timing seems favorable, the specific nature of the game remains unknown. It is unclear if the project will be Super Mario Odyssey 2 or an entirely new concept.

Based on Nintendo's history with 3D Mario titles, a new original adventure is a strong possibility. Super Mario Galaxy 2 stands as the only direct sequel in the 3D series history (excluding the distinction between Super Mario 3D Land and Super Mario 3D World). If the release does not occur in 2026, the wait for a new mainline title would extend to a full decade.

My favorite dietitian-approved spritz is just 4 ingredients — and it can be made with or without alcohol

Place cinnamon sticks inside the spritz for a festive touch. Rachel Hosie I make a four-ingredient, Aperol-based drink when I host, and it's a true crowd-pleaser. It's a lighter alternative to heavier cocktails, and you can easily make it nonalcoholic. It's also easy to upgrade with festive garnishes, such as rosemary sprigs and cinnamon sticks. For many, the Aperol spritz is reserved for daylight-saving time, falling into the same bucket as loose linen shirts and beach days. Once the clock falls back, the quintessential, three-ingredient summer cocktail — made with Aperol, Prosecco, and sparkling water — seems to go into hibernation. I, however, don't fall into that camp. The bright-orange, refreshing spritz is one of my year-round orders. I've found that with a couple of easy tweaks, an Aperol-based drink can actually be very versatile. My version of the classic recipe has become one of my favorite drinks in the fall and winter months, regardless of whether I'm on the sun-drenched Côte d'Azur or in my native drizzly England. Making the spritz is really easy — and it doesn't even need to contain alcohol I only need four ingredients to make this beverage. Rachel Hosie I've seen various versions of this cocktail online with slightly different ratios and ingredients. In my experience, you don't need to be too strict about it. You can alter the quantities based on your tastes and preferences, but for one simple spritz, I use the following: 2 ounces of Aperol or a nonalcoholic alternative 3 ounces of prosecco or nonalcoholic sparkling wine 2 ounces of apple or cranberry juice 1 ounce of soda water Pour the above ingredients into a glass with plenty of ice, and you're done. There's no shaking required. Although the above measurements yield one cocktail, I've scaled the recipe and served it in a large punch bowl or pitcher when hosting friends at my home. You can make it stronger by adding a splash of alcoholic spiced apple cider or go for a heavier Aperol pour. Just keep in mind that Aperol is a distilled spirit with 11% alcohol content, so even when it's diluted, it's worth being mindful of how many units you're having. To garnish the drink, you can use a sprig of rosemary, cinnamon sticks, dehydrated orange slices, or cranberries. One of my favorite touches is making big ice cubes with an apple slice or a star anise inside. And if you really love a sweet cocktail, coat the rim of your glass with a bit of cinnamon sugar. When enjoyed mindfully, this 'lighter' drink beats out heavier cocktails Whenever I host people at my home, I have the spritz cocktails ready to serve. Rachel Hosie I ran my recipe by dietitian Nichola Ludlam-Raine, who said that my festive spritz is a "lighter, more hydrating option" than many other popular holiday cocktails. As your glass empties, top up your drink with soda water, which Ludlam-Raine explains counteracts alcohol's diuretic effect and helps keep you from getting dehydrated. If you're not drinking at all, swap the Aperol for Crodini or Wilfred's aperitif and the prosecco for a nonalcoholic sparkling wine to create a tasty mocktail. "I would totally drink this myself and recommend it to my patients," Ludlam-Raine told me. "It's a great way of having a tasty drink without feeling like you're missing out if you're not having alcohol." Although Ludlam-Raine said that fruit juice adds flavor and antioxidants, you should be mindful of how much you use to keep your sugar intake in check. This is especially true if you're having multiple … which I always am because this drink is that delicious. Read the original article on Business Insider
