Quick Summary#

Episode 3 of Fallout Season 2 serves as a deep dive into the lore of the wasteland, specifically drawing heavy inspiration from Fallout: New Vegas. The narrative introduces Caesar's Legion in significant detail, showcasing various enemy types including Centurions and Praetorian Guards. A major highlight is the introduction of Macaulay Culkin as Legate Lacerta, a new leadership figure within the faction.

The episode also revisits familiar locations and characters. The Ghoul interacts with Victor, a Securitron, at the House Resort and Country Club. Visual references include the El Diablo roller coaster and the Sunset Sarsaparilla headquarters. The episode is dense with iconography, from the 13-star flag to specific weaponry like the Super Sledge and Hunting Rifles used by NCR Rangers. These elements collectively bridge the gap between the television adaptation and the source material.

Faction Focus: Caesar's Legion#

The episode marks the introduction of Caesar's Legion, the Roman-themed faction originating from the Mojave Wasteland. The group is depicted with a strict hierarchy mirroring the game. Early scenes feature an escort composed of specific enemy types: a Centurion leads the group, supported by Vexilliarii and Praetorian Guards. In the background, a Frumentarius scout is identifiable by their wolf skin headpiece, while a Recruit Decanus appears with a black and red masked headpiece.

Leadership within the Legion is a key focus. Macaulay Culkin portrays Legate Lacerta, the second-in-command who wears the iconic metal bearded mask previously associated with the character Lanius in the games. The current leader is simply referred to as Caesar, wearing a black feathered cloak similar to the game's version but representing a new individual holding the title. The episode confirms the fate of the original Caesar, Edward Sallow, whose corpse is visible later in the narrative.

Locations and Visual References 📍#

Several locations from the Fallout universe appear, grounding the episode in the established map. The Ghoul meets the Securitron Victor at the House Resort and Country Club, a location tied to the Camp Golf area in the games. Historically, this estate was owned by Robert House and later occupied by the NCR. In the background of this scene, the faint shape of the El Diablo roller coaster is visible, alongside the Bison Steve Hotel sign.

Another distinct location is the Sunset Sarsaparilla headquarters bottling plant, taken over by Thaddeus and his gang. This facility produces the wasteland's second most famous soft drink. The episode also features a pre-war flashback displaying the United States '13-star' flag, an alternate history symbol representing the Commonwealths system adopted in 1969.

Items, Weapons, and Iconography 🛠️#

The episode is dense with specific items and iconography. The NCR Rangers appear wearing the classic brown trench coat, helmet, and respirator mask famously featured on the Fallout: New Vegas box art. They are armed with Hunting Rifles, a standard weapon for the faction in the games. Meanwhile, the Brotherhood of Steel characters, Maximus and Paladin Harkness, utilize T-60 series power armor and a Super Sledge weapon, the latter being a rocket-powered hammer from Fallout 4.

Operational details include the children at the bottling plant removing bottle caps, the wasteland's currency. They may be searching for rare Sunset Sarsaparilla star bottle caps associated with a game quest. The House Industries Mark II Securitron is also featured, identified by its machine gun and grenade launcher systems. Finally, Quintus mentions Roger Maxson, the founder of the Brotherhood of Steel, providing historical context regarding the faction's origins and the mutiny that sparked it.

Ben Horowitz says that investing teams shouldn't be 'too much bigger than basketball teams'

Ben Horowitz said investment teams should be the size of a playing five in basketball. Phillip Faraone/Getty Images for WIRED Ben Horowitz said his rule of thumb is about five people on an investing team. He said Andreessen Horowitz maintains lean teams and strong communication across verticals. AI tools are enabling startups and VCs to thrive with fewer employees. Ben Horowitz is a big fan of tiny teams. On an episode of the A16z podcast, the Andreessen Horowitz cofounder shared how his venture capital firm maintains a lean operation despite being one of the world's largest. "An investing team shouldn't be too much bigger than a basketball team," he said, referring to advice he got from famed American investor David Swensen in 2009. He added, "A basketball team is five people who start, and the reason for that is the conversation around the investments really needs to be a conversation." Horowitz cofounded the Silicon Valley VC firm with Marc Andreessen in 2009. Before A16Z, he ran enterprise software company Opsware, which Hewlett-Packard acquired. A16z has backed marquee companies including Meta, Airbnb, GitHub, and Coinbase. The VC said he always kept the basketball team size in mind but also knew that the firm had to expand to keep up with how "software was eating the world," his signature phrase. The solution was to split the firm into different investment verticals. To maintain good communication, staff attend other teams' meetings when investment themes overlap. The firm also organizes a two to three-day offsite twice a year, "with not much agenda." Horowitz said that people who join them from other firms say that A16Z has "less politics" than firms with 10 or 11 people because his firm has a culture where politicking is "disincentivized." A16z might have been early to the tiny team trend, but it's catching on fast with VCs and startups across the world. Startups are actively seeking to stay small, with many having fewer than 10 people. Founders told Business Insider that AI and vibe coding tools have boosted their productivity, allowing them to get things done with far fewer people. Less politics and bureaucracy are also big pluses, they say. "We're going to see 10-person companies with billion-dollar valuations pretty soon," OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said in February 2024. "In my little group chat with my tech CEO friends, there's this betting pool for the first year there is a one-person billion-dollar company, which would've been unimaginable without AI. And now will happen." Read the original article on Business Insider
