Quick Summary#

Following the conclusion of the series, speculation regarding a sequel checking in on characters years after the Season 5 finale has been addressed by the show's creators. The Duffer Brothers have firmly ruled out the possibility of a sequel, describing such a project as a 'gross cash grab.' In a recent interview, Matt Duffer explained that the Season 5 finale serves as the definitive end for the characters' stories.

While a sequel is off the table, the brothers confirmed they are actively developing a live-action spinoff. This new series will feature a completely fresh mythology, new characters, and a new setting. Additionally, an animated series titled Stranger Things: Tales From '85 is in development, and a making-of documentary is scheduled for release on Netflix.

Creators Rule Out 'Grandpa Hopper' Storyline 🚫#

The co-creators and showrunners of Stranger Things have definitively stated that a sequel series focusing on the original characters will not happen. Matt Duffer explained that the Season 5 finale was designed to be the final chapter for the ensemble cast. He noted that the visual of Mike closing the basement door symbolizes the characters moving on from their childhoods into adulthood.

Matt Duffer elaborated on why revisiting the characters in the future feels unnecessary and creatively uninteresting. He specifically dismissed the idea of a storyline featuring an older cast.

"I mean, I guess a sequel could be about a midlife crisis," Matt Duffer said. "That just sounds really uninteresting! (Laughs.) Grandpa Hopper? I don’t know how that would read as anything but a gross cash grab to me."

The brothers emphasized that the show was always intended to be a coming-of-age story. With the final season complete, they feel they have said everything they wanted to say about these specific characters and the Upside Down.

"I don’t know how that would read as anything but a gross cash grab to me."

New Live-Action Spinoff in Development 🎬#

While a sequel is ruled out, the Duffer brothers are currently working on a separate live-action Stranger Things spinoff. They described this upcoming project as a 'clean slate' that will explore a 'completely new mythology.' According to the creators, the new series will feature new characters, a new town, and a new world, with no common characters from the original show returning.

The creators offered a specific detail regarding how this new series connects to the original. It will address the mysterious briefcase seen in the Season 5 finale.

"The spinoff is going to delve into that and explain that, and you’re going to understand it," Matt Duffer said of the briefcase rock. "But it’s a completely different mythology. So it’s not a deep exploration of the Mind Flayer or anything like that. It’s very fresh and very new, but yes, it will answer some of the loose threads that are remaining."

Netflix currently has two announced spinoffs in development. The live-action series mentioned above is distinct from the animated series, Stranger Things: Tales From '85, which is set between Seasons 2 and 3.

Upcoming Content and Documentaries 📺#

Beyond the scripted series, Netflix is expanding the Stranger Things universe with additional content. An animated series titled Stranger Things: Tales From '85 is set to premiere at some point this year. This series takes place within the same universe but is set between Seasons 2 and 3, following the original characters as they face new paranormal threats.

For fans interested in the production of the final season, a making-of documentary is scheduled to release on Netflix on January 12. This documentary will provide a behind-the-scenes look at the conclusion of the global phenomenon.

To summarize the current landscape of the franchise:

  • A sequel series checking in on characters years later is not happening.
  • A live-action spinoff with new characters and mythology is in development.
  • An animated series, Tales From '85, is coming later this year.
  • A making-of documentary releases on January 12.

"The spinoff is going to delve into that and explain that, and you’re going to understand it."
